Definition
Annualized bleed rate (ABR)
The average number of bleeds someone has in 12 months. This is the measurement most commonly used to evaluate hemophilia treatments
Anticlotting factor
Anticoagulants, which are proteins that prevent clotting. Eg: tissue factor pathway inhibitor (TFPI)
Clotting factor
Protein in blood that promotes blood clotting, also known as procoagulant. You may see one represented with a capital F and Roman numeral. Eg: low levels of FVIII or FIX can determine a hemophilia diagnosis and severity
Mean
The average of a set of numbers
Median
The middle value in a set of numbers arranged from smallest to largest
Rebalancing therapy
A non-factor based treatment that restores the balance of clotting and anticlotting factors in the blood to improve clotting
Subcutaneous
Refers to something that is given just under the skin, such as certain hemophilia treatments delivered by injection
Target joint
A single joint that has had 3 or more spontaneous bleeds within a 6-month period
Thrombin
A protein in the body that works in a key clotting process
Tissue factor pathway inhibitor (TFPI)
A key anticlotting factor that prevents clotting
